The Artelon® STT Spacer is intended to be implanted into the scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) joint as an interpositional spacer between the scaphoid bone and the trapezium and trapezoid bones. The device is intended to be used in thumb disabilities caused by osteoarthritis.
The Artelon® STT Spacer is a woven, L-shaped, device made of a biocompatible, degradable material, Artelon, a polycaprolactone-based polyurethaneurea (PUUR). The vertical portion separates the scaphoid bone and the trapezium and trapezoid bones of the STT joint, and the horizontal portion is used to fixate the device. With this approach, the anatomy and movement of the STT joint is left nearly intact.
The Artelon fibers are safe and well tolerated – In vivo biocompatibility studies of the material have shown no adverse signs of tissue reactions, inflammation or foreign body response. Moreover, human biopsies have revealed excellent Artelon to host tissue biocompatibility in both bone and soft tissues.
